Minor scale

The minor scale is probably new for you. You can play all the natural notes starting with A: A-B-c-d-e-f-g-a. You can express it in intervals too: M2-m2-M2-M2-m2-M2-M2 or tones 1-0,5-1-1-0,5-1-1. This scale feels opposite to major: negative, dark, depressing and sad.

As you see these scales have different intervals between the notes. You can construct major or minor scale from any note, holding to its interval composition. For example – minor scale starting with C (you can say – in the key of C) – C-D-Eb-F-G-Ab-Bb-c. Another example – major scale in the key of A. A-B-c#-d-e-f#-g-a. Read everything carefully a few times in order to understand it completely – it is the foundation of further theory.

Scale degrees.

Each note has its purpose, name and function in the context of specific scale. Notes of scale are called scale degrees. Tonic, subdominant and dominant are the main degrees in scale. Others are side degrees. Tonic is the most important, then goes dominant, subdominant, both mediant and the least – super- and sub- tonics. The degrees of scale are valid only in the relation to tonic. In simple words main degrees keep tonality of musical piece. Side degrees have more accessory function.
